iPad Pro Program for AHU Nursing

After a visit to Apple’s headquarters at Cupertino, CA in late February, 2020, the President Edwin Hernandez of AdventHealth University and his team came back with a vision and excitement about partnering with Apple in an innovative project. We identified Nursing as the program for an iPad Pro experiment. After 6 months of meeting within the university as well as the Apple health executive team, we found the home that met the 2 criteria for the pilot program. The Nursing program at our satellite campus in Denver had a Nursing faculty champion of iPad Pro and a small cohesive group of Nursing students, the two criteria for a successful pilot during the summer trimester of 2021.

The first thing we verified with the new iPad Pro device was it supported seamlessly the Examsoft platform for the Nursing’s high stake secured testing. For a pre-pilot test, we rolled out to five students in Denver in January, 2021 to assess the feasibility of implementing Examsoft exams. After a quick resolution to a glitch on the iOs Examsoft app, we proceeded to moving forward with including AR Nursing apps and resources for the summer pilot of 30 Nursing students in Denver. Prior to the first week of class in May, 2021, we engaged a well known Apple Distinguished Educator for iPad rollout, Dr. Missi Stec of Emory University to conduct the unboxing event and basic training with a group of faculty.

On May 11, we conducted an in-person iPad Pro unboxing event with the students. After an initial bandwidth issue, the students were able to get on with the preloaded iPad Pros and downloaded all the rest of the necessary apps for the Nursing program. The partnership with Apple and Jamf (Apple Device Manager) was instrumental for a successful rollout experience during the first week of class. Another team working on the user experience assessment and learning impact research will roll out the first survey right after the first exam in June. If the pilot is a great success, we will conduct another pilot at the Orlando campus. When both pilots met all the success metrics accompanied by data from the assessment and learning research, the vision of the President is to expand to the rest of the Nursing program, and eventually the entire campus.
